I have been a long-term advocate for smoke-free spaces across the City of Sydney. My Motion to conduct a smoke-free trial in Martin Place in 2016 resulted in a permanent measure that was followed by the establishment of similar zones in Pitt Street Mall and Sydney Square. At this week’s Council meeting, my Motion to conduct an audit of other public spaces around the local government area was passed unanimously. This means the City of Sydney will now review the potential to create more smoke-free public spaces in areas outside the CBD. Making our public spaces smoke-free not only benefits our health but reduces unsightly and polluting cigarette butt litter. I look forward to the findings of City’s forthcoming study.
