Hyde Park Paperbark Investigations

By May 18, 2021News

At last night’s Council meeting my motion about these four paperbark trees in Hyde Park was carried unanimously.

The City of Sydney will now liaise with Heritage NSW, the Aboriginal Heritage Office and the History Council of NSW to investigate the planting and significance of these trees.

The location and formation of the plantings indicate a traditional Aboriginal signpost, a marker used throughout NSW to identify an Aboriginal burial site or monument. It’s quite possible that these trees were planted in solidarity with First Nations People who fought for their traditional lands during the ‘Frontier Wars’ of 1770 – 1932.
