City of Sydney’s Unfair Free Same Sex Weddings Proposal

At the October 23 Council meeting Councillor Linda Scott moved a motion requesting that City of Sydney spaces and venues be provided for free or at a reduced cost for same-sex weddings.

I asked for the motion to be amended so it would be open to all couples, not just same-sex ones, which was voted down by Clover Moore.

This has been a fight for equality before the law and it’s my belief that we can’t ask for equality for ourselves and then deny it to others. It’s also been about making marriage inclusive not exclusive, and this motion flies in the face of that principle.

Marriage is important to our society, not just one or other section of the community, and that’s what my vote reflected.
