Centenary of Anzac Soil Collection Ceremony

By May 14, 2018News

On the morning of 14 May I had the privilege of attending one of the final Centenary of Anzac Soil Collection Ceremonies with David Elliott MP and Councillor Craig Chung at Signal Point, Garden Island.

The ceremonies are part of an important program taking place around the state for the Anzac Memorial Centenary Project. Soil samples are currently being collected from 1,700 NSW towns, suburbs and localities given as a place of address by First World War enlistees.

Garden Island is both a Battlefield and Place of Enlistment with Private John Thompson joining the AIF from the Island on 17 June 1917 and the Japanese Midget Submarines sinking HMAS Kuttabul alongside 76 years ago this month.

The soil from Garden Island will feature in a permanent artwork in the new Hall of Service in the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, opening in late 2018.

Lest We Forget.
